Thai Massage: Revitalising the Entire Body

Unlike Western massage styles, the Thai version focuses on circulation and pressure points, promoting internal health as well as muscular flexibility. Treatment often begins with the feet and gradually moves upwards towards the head. The body is gently arranged into four positions (face-down, face-up, side, and sitting position), which enables the masseur to perform a variety of exercises that would be otherwise unworkable.

Rhythmic compressions, rolling of limbs, and gentle rocking are Thai massage methods employed in order to relax and realign energies in the body. Varying amounts of pressure are applied to energy lines (or 'Sen') along the body in accordance with the Ayurvedic principles of balancing one's energy.

Elbows, feet, knees, and forearms are used to execute certain strokes and manipulations, making the experience quite physical for both parties. Finding oneself in the lap of a masseur, though occasionally surprising, is not uncommon and serves to augment a deep stretch.

Thai Foot Massage is a massage of the feet and also lower legs. Thai foot massage is both invigorating and deeply relaxing and involves hands on massage, stretching and acupressure to stimulate reflex points. It has elements of Shiatsu, Reflexology, and Chinese massage, incorporated into the treatment. Traditional Thai Foot Massage includes the use of a traditional Thai foot massage stick as well as using the palms, fingers, thumbs and knuckles to work the feet.

This wonderfully enjoyable foot massage dates back more than two thousand years, originating in China, and is seen all over Thailand today. Treatment includes working on 'Sen' lines, which are from the Ayurvedic tradition and are the equivalent to the meridians of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The techniques of Thai Foot Massage are thought to stimulate and open these energy channels, leaving you feeling relaxed, balanced and invigorated.

Thai Foot Massage is great for tired feet, improving circulation and lymph movement in the feet and lower legs, and improving flexibility. As with all of our massage options, you can expect at least 60 minutes from start to finish. The Thai oil massage is a total body massage. Your masseuse will start by massaging your feet and then gradually work her way up your body to your calves, your hamstrings, your back, your neck and your shoulders, finishing up on your head. She will ask you to turn over at various points so that both sides of your body get massaged.

At the back massage the masseuse will put most or all of her body weight on your upper back, just beneath your shoulder blades. She will apply just enough pressure to force out all of the air from your lungs. Don't resist it, it is only momentary and you will soon inhale deeply.

The pressure applied during the Thai oil massage is very different to that applied during the traditional massage - it is much less severe! The pressure is distributed over a greater area of your body via her palms rather than her thumbs or elbow. She will also pick a less sensitive area of your body to apply the pressure.

Another major difference with the oil massage is that the masseuse will massage along the natural contours of your muscle structure rather than massaging at specific pressure points. It's down to personal preference as to which massage you prefer, traditional or oil.
