About Us
A recent study of mainstream newspapers in Europe showed just 3.5% of total coverage is devoted to development issues, focusing on disaster relief. A similar study in Africa showed even less coverage of development issues – the fact that billions of dollars flow into this sector notwithstanding. The Development Magazine is an attempt to fill this gap – providing space and content focusing on development. It provides a forum for debate, discussion and dissemination of development communication and a platform for Development experts to engage in a discourse; in a region where media generally does not recognise this form of Journalism as important.
Our Objectives
Information Dissemination:
Through our publications and stakeholder engagements, we seek to become part of
“We embrace the ideals of alternative journalism”
Forum for Discussion and Debate:
We seek to bring together public and private sector players, as well as civil society organisations and Development partners to ponder and find answers to fundamental questions on social development, and the fight against poverty by interpreting global and regional trends. Ultimately, citizens are empowered, not only to have a voice on issues that concern them, but also to make informed decisions about their lives and posterity.
Communication for Development:
In recent years, positive developments in Africa have gone unnoticed, and undocumented as the mainstream media have tended to focus on politics, the ‘bad news’ – disasters and armed conflict – and ‘celebrity’ news. As a result, the ‘good news’ has tended to have a limited space in the media. As a medium of communication, we purpose to bring out the numerous success stories from across the region about community transformation and national development.
Ultimately, the objective of the Development Magazine is to become a point of reference for policy makers and implementers, public and private actors, Development Partners, National and International Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), UN agencies, Community Based Organizations (CBOs), Media, the Academia, Researchers, Members of Parliament, and the public at large.
